Founding Partners

The Check-in Asia team comprises experienced travel analysts, marketers and creative consultants who specialise in different markets across Asia. The company founders and managing partners are Gary Bowerman and Amy Fabris-Shi.

Gary

Gary Bowerman

British-born, Gary was previously a researcher for Rough Guides in Central America,
Editorial Director for a travel publisher in London and a consultant for the American
Society of Travel Agents. After relocating to Shanghai in 2004, he spent two years as
Editor of Shanghai Business Review, was a columnist for CNN Traveller and
contributed to Business Traveler, Condé Nast Traveller, Forbes Travel Guide, Luxe
Guides, Zagat and Travel + Leisure, before co-founding Scribes of the Orient and
Check-in Asia.

Gary is an experienced Asia travel trends analyst, commentator and travel
conference speaker. He has produced detailed reports on the tourism economies of
China, Japan, Myanmar and Malaysia, and was one of a handful of travel industry
contributors to The Polarisation of Asian Travellers white paper. In December 2017,
he authored Check-in Asia’s 10 Key Trends in Asian Travel & Tourism report.

Having monitored Chinese domestic and outbound tourism since 2004, his book The
New Chinese Traveler: Business Opportunities from the Chinese Travel Revolution
was published in 2014. He has written several op eds discussing Chinese travel
trends, undertaken media interviews – recently including CNN Business Traveller
(Dec 2017) and The Straits Times (Jan 2018) – and spoken at events in Shanghai,
Beijing, Suzhou, Singapore and London.

Amy Fabris-Shi

A former professional ballerina, Sydney-born Amy Fabris-Shi is a respected writer,
branding and content marketing expert specialising in hospitality and travel. Based in
Shanghai for 15 years, she co-founded Scribes of the Orient in 2007 and Check-in
Asia in 2015, and directs both companies from our China headquarters.

With a keen eye for hotel, destination, wellbeing and lifestyle trends, Amy is
frequently called on to research and curate evocative online and offline content and
on-brand stories for the world’s most celebrated luxury lifestyle brands, including
Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, Bulgari Hotels & Resorts and Hyatt Hotels & Resorts.

From Hangzhou to Tianjin and Taipei, Amy travels around Greater China working
directly with her clients to craft inspiring editorial and social content and impactful
campaigns across multiple platforms. Historical reports for Shanghai’s Peace Hotel
and Waldorf Astoria on the Bund, and interviews with brand ambassadors including
supermodel Lin Chiling for Mandarin Oriental, are among the diverse hospitality
projects she undertakes.

Amy also covers stylish travel destinations for global publishers, including Condé
Nast Traveler, Centurion Black Book, DestinAsian and Vogue Australia. She is the
author of Select Guide Shanghai and Experience Shanghai by Insight Guides, and
an invited contributor to high-profile annual ‘best of’ lists around the world.
